GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College soccer team scored a goal in each half to upend visiting Nazareth College 2-0, on senior day this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Herons have won each of past seven meetings with the Golden Flyers and lead the series 13-3 overall.

Less than three minutes into the game William Smith first-year Laura Burnett-Kurie (Oyster River/Durham, N.H.) collected the ball just past midfield and fed classmate Brittany Warren (Liverpool/Syracuse, N.Y.) a perfect through ball. In behind the defense, Warren dribbled to goal and slipped the ball under keeper Holly Sands (Notre Dame Academy/Hanover, Mass.) for a 1-0 Heron (9-2-2) lead.

Nazareth created its most dangerous opportunity in the closing seconds, but sophomore goalie Nikki Dudley (Chittenango/Canastota, N.Y.) came out and made the stop to take William Smith into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

The Golden Flyers had a good scoring chance off of a corner kick in the early going of the second stanza, but Beth Berger’s (Chittenango/Chittenango, N.Y.) shot went just wide. Nazareth (8-3-1) continued to attack, but the William Smith defense stayed strong.

Winning a corner kick in the 89th minute, Heron sophomore Alex Rieben (Guilford/Guilford, Conn.) headed home junior Pria Young’s (Council Rock/Richboro, Pa.) cross for her third goal of the year and a 2-0 William Smith lead with 1:29 left to play.

The Golden Flyers outshot the Herons 12-7 for the game and won six corner kicks to William Smith’s three. In goal, Dudley had five stops to earn her sixth shutout of the year. Sands made two saves for the afternoon for Nazareth.

The Herons return to action on Oct. 22, traveling to Clarkson for a 4 p.m., Liberty League contest.
